**Presowing Treatment Of Seeds By A Pulsed Magnetic Field: A
New Technique In Crop Production**

The new technique of presowing treatment of seeds is based on
their irradiation by a pulsed magnetic field. It speeds seed
germination, stimulates further plant growth, and increases
grain and vegetable yields. The method is environmentally clean
and has a low energy consumption.

Highly efficient installations have been developed for the
large-scale use of the technique of the presowing pulsed
magnetic field treatment (PMFT) of seeds in crop production. The
method has been tested with success in the Central Black-Earth
Area of Russia over the past five years. The mutational
variability of plants grown with the use of presowing PMFT did
not exceed the natural background for conventionally grown
plants.

The stimulating effect of presowing PMFT is manifested in a
change of the thermogenesis parameters at early stages of seed
germination. The time-dependences of the temperature changes of
the germinating seeds indicate that presowing PMFT shortens the
duration of physico-chemical thermogenesis and increases the
amplitude of the thermal fluctuations of biological
thermogenesis.

The PMFT installation consists of a small generator of electric
pulses and a source of a magnetic field (an operating chamber in
the form of a solenoid coil). The seeds are subjected to the PMF
treatment as they are poured through the operating chamber. The
installation, intended for use in production conditions, has the
following technical specifications:

power supply ................................................
220V, 50Hz or 110V, 60 Hz
intake power
................................................. 50 VA
capacity
...................................................... 10 tons
per hour

operating chamber dimensions:

diameter........................................... 200 mm
length ............................................... 500 mm
weight ............................................... 6
kg

duration of continuous operation -- unlimited.

The PMFT-induced effects are very sensitive to the parameters of
the magnetic pulses and operating mode. The PMFT parameters and
magnetic treatment modes constitute the know-how of the
technique.

The proposed method of PMF seed treatment stimulates seed
germination and can therefore be used to increase the field
germination rates of seeds and, hence, their price. The
treatment suppresses the spread of root rot and is an
alternative to fungicide treatment of the seeds. Presowing PMFT
enhances plant vitality and yield, the treatment being most
effective on fertile and fertilized soils.

The proposed technique can also be used in the food industry,
specifically to hasten barley seed sprouting in beer production.
The R&D involved in the technique has been completed, and it
can now be employed on a large scale. The method has been
successfully tested on farms in the Voronezh, Lipetsk, Nizhny
Novgorod, and Moscow regions. Highly efficient installations
have been developed to implement the method.

source device [1] are respectively connected with two Helmholtz
coils [3] which are similar in structure, uniform in size by
power source cord [5]. A pulsed magnetic field or a uniform

**Abstract** --Treating seeds to increase germination speed.
The germination speed of seeds is increased by moving the seeds

produced by a source of electric, magnetic or electromagnetic
energy. As shown, a screw conveyer 20 conveys the seeds from an
inlet chamber 16, which is supplied by a hopper 10 via a control
slide 14, to an outlet chamber 24, the seeds being caused by the
centrifugal force to move in a helical path along the inside
wall of a plastic tube 22 past an electromagnet 38 surrounding
the tube, so as to be subjected to a magnetic field while the
seed is both moved in a helical path and is at the same time
rolled to expose several surfaces of the seed to the field. The
treated seeds are collected in a collector 26. The electromagnet
38 may be replaced by electric field generating means, or by
X-ray, high frequency, microwave or other electromagnetic field
generating means.

plant growth and simplified method.
 The proposed
invention relates to the field of forestry and can be used to
stimulate the development of woody plants.

There is a known method of growing
plants (a.s. USSR N 1026708, A 01 G 7/04), which consists of
exposing the soil prepared before sowing to a magnetic field.
Next, seeds of annual crops (for example, wheat) are sown in
the soil. The weight of wet plants on treated soil is 19%
higher than on untreated soil, which leads to an increase in
their productivity by 19% and accelerated development phases.

The disadvantage of this method is
that the residual magnetization of the soil within 6 months
decreases by 17-50% and after 12 months it practically
disappears completely.

Therefore, when using this method to
stimulate the development of woody plants, soil magnetization
must be carried out annually, since woody plants are
perennial, and stimulation of their development must be
carried out before the planting reaches the design height
(18-20 m), which occurs 18-19 years after planting (when
condition of the use of magnetic fields), only at this height
does the planting begin to aworka most effectively in
agroforestry terms. Annual magnetization of the soil leads to
a lot of labor and time.

There is also a known method for
stimulating the growth of garden plants (Japanese patent
N56-50804, A 01 G 7/06, A 01 G 7/04) prototype, which consists
of introducing powder from a magnetic material into molten
aluminum, forming a wire and wrapping it around it trunks and
branches of garden plants, thereby stimulating their growth.

The disadvantage of
this method is the large labor costs, which occur due to the
fact that the magnetic wire must be re-wound once a year on
the trunks and branches of plants, since the latter grow not
only in height, but also in thickness, and the re-wound wire
cuts into the wood , forming aconstrictionsa and interfering
with the normal development of plants.

Thus, the claimed
technical solution is aimed at reducing labor costs while
stimulating the growth of woody plants.

The technical result is
achieved by applying a plastic substance containing magnetic
powder to the trunks and/or skeletal branches of plants,
wherein the plastic substance contains from 30 to 50% of its
volume of magnetic powder.

A plastic substance
containing magnetic powder is applied to the trunks and (or)
skeletal branches of woody plants by coating.

As plants grow, the
plastic substance first stretches (the first 4-5 years), and
then small cracks form in its continuous coating;
nevertheless, it adheres well to the surface of the trunk
and skeletal branches of woody plants.

Therefore, unlike the
prototype, which requires annual rewinding of the magnetic
wire, labor costs are significantly lower because the
plastic substance is applied to the trunks and (or) skeletal
branches of plants only twice (the first time after
planting, the second after 6-8 years).

The proposed technical
solution has one more significant feature: the plastic
substance contains from 30 to 50% of its volume magnetic
powder, this feature makes it possible to create a magnetic
field of optimal strength for the growth and development of
woody plants.

Saturation of a plastic
substance with magnetic powder by less than 30% creates an
insufficient magnetic field (Table 2) for good plant growth,
and saturation with magnetic powder by more than 50% reduces
the ability of the plastic substance to fix and hold
magnetic powder on the surface of tree trunks and skeletal
branches.

In this case, the
powder begins to crumble under the influence of atmospheric
conditions (rain, high temperatures, etc.), the integrity of
the substance is violated, and large cracks form in the
coating.

All this leads to
partial separation of sections of plastic substance containing
powder from the bark of woody plants, a decrease in the
intensity of the magnetic field acting on the tree, and the need
to re-apply (repair) the coating to the perimeters of trunks and
skeletal branches of plants, which leads to increased labor
costs Thus,
the technical result of the proposed solution is achieved by the
combination of all its features and is expressed in reducing
labor costs while stimulating the growth of woody plants.
The claimed solution
was carried out as follows. First, a plastic substance (for example,
garden pitch) was mixed with a metal powder made from a
ferromagnetic material (for example, SmCO5 or an iron-nickel
alloy). >Moreover,
metal powder was obtained from waste generated during
metalworking. Powder with a particle diameter of 0.5 to 2 mm was used.
 The required
powder fractions were separated from the total mass using sets
of sieves with different hole diameters. Powder fractions less than
0.5 mm in size, due to their small size, create a magnetic field
of insufficient strength (Table 3) for optimal growth of woody
plants, and powder fractions more than 2 mm under the influence
of unfavorable environmental factors (daily temperature changes,
etc.) crumble from the mass of plastic substance connecting
them, which leads to premature repair of the entire mass of
plastic substance with powder due to the formation of cracks and
disruption of the integrity of the coating, ultimately
increasing labor costs, since in this case the coating is
reapplied not after 5-7 years, but after 2 3 years. The plastic substance was
mixed with ferromagnetic powder, and the latter was added from
30 to 50% of the volume of the plastic substance. This proportion between the
plastic substance and the powder allows us to subsequently
obtain a magnetic field of 25a50 Oe, which is optimal for the
growth of woody plants. A plastic substance (garden pitch) was
mixed with ferromagnetic powder as follows. First, a plastic
substance (garden pitch) was heated in a ceramic container to
50-60oC, which brought it into a semi-liquid state. Then
ferromagnetic powder was added to it and the vessel with the
substance was placed in cold water to cool. During the cooling
process, the substance (garden pitch) and ferromagnetic powder
were mixed with a wooden spatula, mixing both components until a
homogeneous mass. Mixing of the plastic substance and
ferromagnetic powder was carried out while cooling the plastic
substance so that the ferromagnetic powder was located more
evenly in the mass of the plastic substance (garden pitch).

Next, the resulting
mixture was stirred on a wooden surface into flagella 0.7-1 mm
thick and 8-10 cm long.

In order to avoid the
garden varnish sticking to the wooden surface, the latter was
moistened with water at room temperature. After rolling, the
resulting flagella were placed in inductive coils for 10a12
hours with a magnetic field strength of 1500a2000 Oe. In this
case, the ferromagnetic powder was magnetized. Magnetized flagella were
strengthened along the perimeter of trunks and (or) skeletal
branches of young woody plants. As experimental data show, flagella adhere
well to trees and do not require replacement for 6-8 years.
A growing tree,
increasing its trunk in diameter, astretchesa the reinforced
flagella without damaging them. Replacement of flagella is
necessary only 6-8 years after the start of their operation,
because only after this period their integrity begins to be
compromised.
The use of the proposed
technical solution will significantly reduce labor costs for
stimulating the growth of woody plants.

[**US4007794
-- Top Desiccation of Crop Plants**](ECPatents/US4007794.pdf) **Abstract** ~ The above-ground growth of potatoes and
like root crops are contacted with high voltage electricity
several days prior to harvesting, the electricity desiccating
the above-ground portion of the crops while not harming the
tubers. A no-load voltage of about 20 kv with an energy density
of about 11-15 kw/foot of width treated is effective. Low-bush
blueberries, and like perennial crops, are pruned by contacting
the above-ground growth thereof with electricity. Pruning, in
the case of blueberries, is most effective when done
approximately every other year in the case of blueberries, a
no-load voltage of 10-20 kv with an energy density of about 2-3
kw/foot of width treated being effective...
The invention relates to a method of killing mature root crop
tops prior to harvesting, and to a method of pruning certain
perennial crop plants, with minimum adverse impact on the
environment. In the past it has been proposed to kill plants
with electricity, as shown in U.S. Pat. Nos. 2,007,383,
2,607,165, 2,632,285, 3,543,488, and 3,559,337. It has not
previously been recognized, however, that certain root crops can
be contacted with electricity to destroy the above-ground
portions thereof while not adversely affecting the tubers -- the
crop portion -- thereof. This has been recognized according to
the present invention, however, and may be utilized to
facilitate the harvesting of potatoes, beets, carrots, onions,
and the like. According to the present invention, some time
before harvesting, after the crops to be harvested are
substantially mature, the above ground growth of the crops is
contacted with electricity from a high-voltage source, which
causes desiccation thereof; for instance for potatoes, the above
ground growth is contacted with electricity from a 20 kv source
about 10-20 days prior to harvesting, and by the time for
harvesting the skin of the potatoes has become more firm, the
potatoes are not subject to disease (i.e. leaf roll), and
harvesting thereof with conventional equipment is greatly
facilitated.
In the past, it has been known to kill the above-ground growth
of some root crops -- i.e. potatoes -- prior to harvesting to
facilitate the harvesting and firm the skin thereof, but past
methods have had a number of drawbacks. For instance, when
conventional chemicals are used to kill the above-ground growth,
they can and do leave residues which might migrate to the food
portion of the crop, and in any event are retained in the soil
to some extent and can be assimilated by the next year's crop;
if the chemicals are applied too closely to a time when it
rains, they may be washed off before they can be effective for
killing the above-ground growth and thus a complete wasteful
repeat of the application is necessary; dense foliage is not
easily penetrated; also; the chemical treatments are often
temperature dependent which means that it is not always possible
to apply them at the optimum time, and therefore optimum
harvesting conditions may not exist. Roto-beating -- that is,
actual physical destruction of the above-ground growth -- also
is practiced in addition to or in place of chemical application.
While roto-beating avoids some of the problems inherent with
chemical treatment, it is fairly energy intensive, and is not as
completely successful as is the chemical treatment.
It has also not been previously recognized that certain
perennial crops -- such as blueberries -- can be pruned with the
application of high-voltage electricity, but not destroyed.
Conventional proposals for the application of electricity to
plants, such as the patents mentioned above, do not recognize
that a crop plant may not be killed but merely the above-ground
growth thereof destroyed by the application of electricity.
According to the present invention, blueberries and like
perennial crops, may be treated by the application of
electricity -- from a 20 kv source, for instance -- to the
above-ground portions thereof every other year to prune the
bushes and thereby encourage future growth. Conventionally,
pruning of blueberry bushes on a commercial scale is
accomplished by burning off of the plants with oilfired burners.
While this effectively prunes the plants without serious damage
to the root systems, it also destroys much of the organic
material in the soil, and is fairly energy intensive. ...it has
been found that 20 kv (no load) appears to be an ideal voltage
for effecting desiccation of the above-ground portions of the
crops, while not adversely affecting the root, food portions
thereof. An effective energy density of about 11-15 kw/foot
width of crop being treated normally results when such a no-load
voltage is being used. While 20 kv and an energy density of
11-15 kw/foot have been found to be workable values, the range
of each can vary widely and still be effective for accomplishing
the desired result. Any voltage and energy density that results
in the application of about 250 milliamps or more to the
above-ground stems of root crops (i.e. potatoes) is believed
effective. A maximum on the voltage and energy density would be
that which would apply so much current that the root portion of
the crop was adversely affected; however, there appears to be no
adverse effect whatsoever when 12 kv with an energy density of
about 11-15 kw/ft is utilized.
The following table gives a summary of actual test results for
the method of top killing of root crops according to the present
invention. Katahdin potato vines in Maine were treated
approximately 21 days prior to harvesting, the potatoes being
harvested approximately 4 months after planting, and the vine
kill rating of the method according to the present invention was
determined one day prior to harvest. The kill rating code for
the below (and the succeeding) table is 1=no or poor kill of
leaves and stems, 2=90% of leaves but poor stem kill, 3=100% of
leaves and 40% of stems killed, 4=100% of leaves and 70% of
stems killed, and 5=100% of leaves and stems killed. By dragging
behind a tractor six 24 inch vertical chains (covering a 16 inch
horizontal band) which were electrically energized with AC
current, the following results were obtained:

here was slight regrowth on all plots, however, this regrowth
may -- it is believed -- be avoided to a large extent by
harvesting closer to the date of treatment with the electricity.

and Des-I-Cate may be increased through proper application
thereof by adjustment of the differential pressure and water
dilution (applied with an F.M.C. sprayer) to 5.0 when the

weeds growing in and around crop rows without destruction of
crops growing therein. A plurality of electrically conductive
spring members are disposed in a generally horizontal plane and
connected to a high voltage source of electricity. The spring
members have a spring constant such that relatively stiff crops
plants will deflect the spring members while relatively flexible
weeds will not deflect them. Substantially all of the plants in

portions of the spring members by moving the spring members
relative to the crop rows parallel to the crop rows. A larger
dwell time of contact is provided between the spring members and

crop rows while the free end extends into a crop row during
movement of the spring member to affect contacting.

the soil in the plowed field. The broken up soil is scooped up
with scooper blades by the forward motion of the plow apparatus
and then conveyed to rotating tillers. The tillers break up the
soil into smaller clumps. The tilled soil is then exposed to
acoustical energy provided by acoustical transducers. The
acoustical energy is of a sufficiently high intensity so as to
kill or destroy weed seeds and insect larvae in the soil. The
soil is then returned to the ground.

**Agricultural Research ( Feb. 2003 )****Radio Frequency Puts the Heat on Plant Pests**

To prevent influx of pests that could create
agricultural problems, produce-importing nations enforce
strict rules --depending on the commodity and the infesting
insect. The rules often require vulnerable produce to be
treated in some way that ensures destruction of pests.

For several decades, methyl bromide has been a mainstay
treatment to kill a wide array of quarantined pests as well as
those encountered in orchards, packinghouses, and food plants.
But this potent chemical fumigant is being phased out because
of evidence linking it to damage to Earth's ozone layer.

Although the effectiveness of using radio waves to kill
destructive insects in agricultural products has been known
for 70 years, the technique has never been applied on a
commercial scale. A recent cooperative effort by four ARS
research laboratories and two universities aims to overcome
the technical barriers for the use of radio wave heating to
control pests on a commercial scale.

Electromagnetic waves of radio frequency can make
molecules vibrate and heat up --like microwaves heat food. The
trick is to kill pest insects without killing the taste or
texture of the food they infest.

Since 2000, a team led by Juming "Jimmy" Tang of
Washington State University (WSU) in Pullman, involving four
ARS laboratories and the University of California-Davis
(UC-Davis), has been working on a 4-year study to see whether
radio waves would be an economical, environmentally friendly
alternative to methyl bromide and other chemicals to
effectively rid fruits and nuts of live, quarantined insects.

**In Texas -- It's Chiefly Citrus**

In Weslaco, Texas, ARS entomologist Guy J. Hallman is
checking out use of radio frequency treatment of citrus
against the Mexican fruit fly. He's in the Crop Quality and
Fruit Insect Research Unit at the Kika de la Garza Subtropical
Agricultural Research Center. Hallman is developing a device
to simulate what's needed to heat-treat citrus fruit with
radio waves commercially.

"We're trying to bridge the gap between the laboratory
and real world," says Hallman. "Once we know how to treat
fruit in a commercial situation and how much it will cost, any
producer, shipper, or packinghouse operator can use the
information to decide whether radio wave pest control is a
viable option."

In Hallman's system, citrus fruit would pass through a
conveyor between a series of radio frequency heaters. To
simulate a commercial system in the laboratory, the fruit are
conveyed in a circulating water bath to keep them moving
during heating. This would prevent the fruit's overheating
from extended contact with any one area of the bath. And to
ensure continuous heating from the peel in to the fruit's
center --essential to killing all fruit flies that might be
present-- a bumper would dunk any fruit that bobbed above the
water surface. This prevents dark-black rings from forming
around the fruit at the water's surface because of an energy
concentration where the water meets the air.

A method using just hot air to treat fruit in boxes or
bins has been tried commercially in Mexico with mixed results.
It takes hours to complete and puts a strain on the fruit's
skin, sometimes causing heat damage. Radio frequency heating
can be done in less than half an hour and is less damaging,
since the fruit is heated uniformly throughout.

Hallman has focused on grapefruits but is also working
with other citrus, including oranges and tangerines. The
larger the fruit, he notes, the harder it is to heat uniformly
and the more likely to form hot and cold spots.

"This multi-lab project is making a serious effort to
take a look at things that haven't been looked at with radio
frequency heating," says Hallman. "I think we stand a good
chance of finding out how radio frequency disinfestation can
be done to a large volume of fruits or nuts -- and if it can
be done on a commercial scale." He predicts that by this
summer he'll have a good idea of what the treatment will cost.

**In Washington -- Apples and Cherries**

If you're in Wapato, Washington, don't be enticed by
the apples floating in the tub in James Hansen's laboratory.
You don't want to go bobbing for them.

There are several reasons, says Hansen, an entomologist
with ARS' Yakima Agricultural Research Laboratory. The first
is that this particular tub is filled with salt water. Second,
if you were to latch onto one of the apples with your teeth,
you might bite the proverbial worm-- a larva hatched from a
codling moth egg.

And Hansen wants these apples intact -- no tooth marks,
please. Such a mark might skew the results of tests he is
conducting on use of radio waves to rid the fruit of live,
pesky insects like the codling moth before market -- or
shipment to trading partners like South Korea and Japan, where
such pests might not already occur. Japan is particularly
stringent about what phytosanitary methods it will accept for
disinfesting fresh produce.

This rule also applies to sweet cherries, a tree fruit
commodity that generates over $145 million in yearly national
export sales, notes Hansen. In cooperation with the team led
by Tang, a professor in biological systems engineering at WSU,
Hansen plans to "bathe" tubs full of apples and cherries with
radio waves to determine exposure times that will kill codling
moth larvae without affecting fruit quality.

From two lines of research, one focusing on the
insects, the other on fruit quality, and three major
disciplines -- engineering, entomology, and plant physiology
-- the collaborators hope to position radio wave treatment as
a technology that can be readily adopted by commercial
packinghouses or quarantine operations in lieu of methyl
bromide.

"Without suitable alternatives to methyl bromide, we're
going to be up a creek," ARS horticulturist Stephen R. Drake
says of the U.S. fruit industry's fight against quarantined
pests. He is with ARS' Tree Fruit Research Laboratory in
Wenatchee, Washington.

"Ideally, you want to treat the fruit with radio
frequency while it's being packed and designated for a
particular market," Hansen explains. "Commercial packers can't
afford to have produce sitting there, so we want this
treatment to kill the insects as soon as it can."

Tang, Hansen, Drake, and Lisa Nevens, an ARS
entomologist at Yakima, first began working on the radio
frequency project in 1996.

**In California -- Tree Nuts and Dried Fruits**

Meanwhile, in California, entomologist Judy A. Johnson
is also keenly attuned to the potential of radio frequency
energy to zap destructive insects. Her primary targets? The
wiggly larvae of the navel orangeworm, Indianmeal moth, and
codling moth. These insects are among the worst enemies of
walnuts, almonds, and pistachios and of dried fruits such as
figs and raisins. Johnson has newly added red flour beetle to
her list of culprits-- a lesser pest of the nut and fruit
crops but a major problem in flour mills and food-processing
plants.

Johnson is doing the radio frequency work at the ARS
San Joaquin Valley Agricultural Sciences Center at Parlier,
near Fresno, in close association with cooperators at WSU and
UC-Davis. They have already developed a preliminary picture of
the target insects' ability to endure heat-- their "thermal
tolerance."

The laboratory experiments that Johnson and her ARS and
university colleagues conducted are the first to extensively
detail the thermal tolerance of the navel orangeworm,
Indianmeal moth, and codling moth.

For one test, Johnson and co-investigators drilled tiny
holes in over 500 in-the-shell walnuts; enticed the slender,
whitish navel orangeworms to enter the shells; then plugged
the holes to block the insects' escape. The scientists then
tried some novel combinations of radio waves and hot forced
air, that is, air that's heated and blown into the test
chamber holding the nuts. Radio waves, alone or combined with
hot forced air, were used to heat the nuts to 55A deg C (131A deg F)
in about 5 minutes. Hot forced air was then used to keep the
nuts at 55A deg C for 5 or 10 minutes.

"All the treatments killed 100 percent of the navel
orangeworms," reports Johnson. What's more, tests led by
co-researchers Tang at Pullman and Elizabeth J. Mitcham at
UC-Davis, showed that the treatments didn't harm the quality
of the nuts -- even in long-term storage.

"That's critical," Johnson points out, "because walnuts
are often stored for a year or more before they show up at
your supermarket."

In addition, walnuts are rich in oil, so they're more
vulnerable to heat damage than some other kinds of nuts, such
as almonds. "That's why we think that if a treatment is okay
for walnuts," Johnson continues, "it will likely be okay for
almonds."

Indianmeal moths proved to be more susceptible to heat
than navel orangeworms are. "Indianmeal moths are silvery, and
wedge-shaped. If you open a kitchen cupboard where you keep
raisins or breakfast cereals and a little moth flies out at
you," Johnson explains, "chances are it's an Indianmeal moth."

For this experiment, Johnson and her colleagues used
metal heating blocks, or plates, specially designed by Tang
for the radio frequency research. They placed target insects
in the small gap between the plates, which were then heated to
specific temperatures and held at those temperatures for
precise periods.

She and her associates assembled some 15,000 Indianmeal
moth larvae for the study, exposing them to temperatures
ranging from 44A deg C to 52A deg C (about 111A deg F to 126A deg F) for 2 to
100 minutes. "In general," Johnson comments, "the lower the
temperature, the longer it took to kill the larvae. These
readings are the basis for a new, math-based model for
projecting the rate of kill at other time-and-temperature
regimens. Because of the large number of larvae tested and the
range of temperatures that we investigated, we're very
confident of the accuracy of the model's projections."

Johnson and her cooperators also used the special heat
plates to discover more about the amount of time and heat that
it takes to kill navel orangeworms. They exposed 15,000 navel
orangeworms to temperatures ranging from 46A deg C to 54A deg C (about
115A deg F to 129A deg F) for 1 to 120 minutes. Using the new data,
they created a mathematical model of the navel orangeworm's
thermal tolerances.

**Electrolysed Water**

**Electrolysed
water** (EOW also known as electrolyzed oxidizing water,
electro-activated water or electro-chemicaly activated water
solution) is produced by the electrolysis of ordinary tap
water containing dissolved sodium chloride.[1]

**Creation
process**
The electrolysis occurs in a specially designed reactor
which allows the separation of the cathodic and anodic
solutions. In this process, hydrogen gas and hydroxide ions
are produced at the cathode, leading to an alkaline solution
that consists essentially of sodium hydroxide. At the anode,
chloride ions are oxidized to elemental chlorine. If some of
this chlorine is allowed to combine with some of the
hydroxide ions produced at the cathode, it disproportionates
into hypochlorous acid, a weak acid and an oxidizing agent.
This "acidic electrolyzed water" can be raised in pH by
mixing in the desired amount of hydroxide ion solution from
the cathode compartment, yielding a solution of sodium
hypochlorite NaOCl which is the major component of ordinary
household laundry bleach. A solution whose pH is 7.3 will
contain equal concentrations of hypochlorous acid and
hypochlorite ion; reducing the pH will shift the balance
toward the acid.

**Efficient
disinfectant**
Both sodium hydroxide and hypochlorous acid are efficient
disinfecting agents;[2] since relatively few microorganisms
can tolerate acidic conditions, the acidic form of EOW is
usually preferred for rinsing food-preparation surfaces,
fruits and vegetables. Preparations sold for topical
application to wounds are usually slightly
alkaline.[citation needed]

**Wound healing
capabilities**
Using a proprietary and non-cytotoxic formulation of
oxychlorine compounds in a pH-neutral solution, Microcyn
Technology, a commercially available electrolyzed water,
provides a shelf life of 2 years and kills infection [3]
without harming healthy tissue [4]. Oxychlorine compounds
occur naturally in the human body as they are released by
neutrophils, which are the most abundant type of white blood
cells in humans and form an essential part of the immune
system.

**Research**
Some promotions of EOW claim that it can act as an
antioxidant food additive; however, both of the
chlorine-containing components of EOW are active chemical
oxidizing agents.[5]

**Electrolyzed Water in Agriculture**

[**http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-09-18/electrolysed-water-scrutinised-for-benefits-for-crops/6786072**](http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-09-18/electrolysed-water-scrutinised-for-benefits-for-crops/6786072)**September 18, 2015****Tasmanian researchers investigate using electrolysed
water on crops****By Sallese Gibson**
Tasmanian vegetable farmers could soon be using electrolysed
water on their crops as an alternative to some chemicals, if
tests confirm suspected benefits.
Electrolysed water works as a surface sanitiser, and is
produced by passing an electrical current through salt
water.
Researchers said it has been used extensively in some
overseas countries as a cleaning agent, but little is known
about its effectiveness in production horticulture.
The Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association (TFGA) has
partnered with the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture to
investigate its use in the vegetable industry.
The institute's Professor Roger Stanley said he was
confident electrolysed water had potential.
"The future here is probably very good," Professor Stanley
said.
"We can use it to extend the shelf life of food.
"The other use could be as a field sanitiser, for
controlling the fungal bacteria infection in crops.
"It's a contact sanitiser so it doesn't have systemic
effects but will prevent the infection from getting into the
plant."

**TFGA expects
'broad applications'**Karine Cadoret from the TFGA agreed.
"The applications really are quite broad and they can
stretch from in-field use, right the way through to
packaging," Ms Cadoret said.
"Electrolysed water technology [could be used for] disease
suppression in-field or cleaning of equipment perhaps for
biosecurity purposes, right the way through washing fresh
produce to extend the shelf life."
She said she hoped the technology would reduce the
industry's reliance on chemicals.
"Disease in production systems is obviously a big issue,"
she said.
"We do have, in conventional farming, an array of chemicals
that can be used - but obviously there are risks associated
with that.
"So to have another tool, part of the array of the things
that [they] can use to ensure that their production will
yield good results has obviously got a lot of potential
benefits."
Professor Stanley said he hoped the move would help the
industry move away from some chemicals.
"At the moment, a lot of crops develop around spray programs
using fungicides and insecticides," he said.
"[Electrolysed water] has the potential to lower the use of
fungicides by preventing the infection in the first place.
"It's a novel and innovative use of an old technology and we
really want our farmers to be up and taking advantage of
these new uses."
Agronomist backs electrolysed water
Mark Parkinson has been using electrolysed water in his
agronomy business in Queensland for the past two years.
"It's made a big difference in helping me getting my farmers
to point A to point B, without getting crucified with
diseases," he said.
Mr Parkinson said he found it effective in reducing the
occurrence of white rot in onion crops.
"Instead of a 90 per cent destruction of the paddocks, it's
been a 90 per cent keepsake or more, 95 per cent.
"I don't believe in golden bullets and this is not a golden
bullet, don't get me wrong, but it's pretty close."
He said it was a much cheaper alternative to most chemicals.
"The inputs in agriculture... [are] beginning to cripple the
farming industry," he said.
"[Electrolysed water] costs three cents a litre to make.
"So you can throw on your $150 or $100-a-hectare chemicals,
they just don't work.
"This is three cents a litre, at 750 litres a hectare, and
it does work."
 Karine Cadoret agreed.
"In terms of production, it's got great, sort of
productivity and cost reduction ... applications," she said.
She said she believed it could also further enhance the
reputation of Tasmania's agriculture industry.
"The clean and green and safe image of the Tasmanian produce
would definitely benefit from having technology like this,"
she said.
"The technology has actually been certified for organic
production systems and it's safe for the environment, as
well as being safe for humans."
Nathan Richardson is a farmer on Tasmania's north-west
coast.
He said he was excited at the prospect of using electrolysed
water as part of his farming enterprise.
"As soon as I heard about it I thought 'right, does that
work in my poultry operation, for either sanitisation or
water consumption for the animals?'" he said.
"I care about the soil and the environment and the people
that are eating our food.
"Anything we can do to lessen the impact on the flora and
fauna through the use of pesticides has got to be a great
thing."

Earth**
Ionized Water. Alkaline Water. Electrically Activated Water.
Ionized Alkaline Water. Anti Microbial Ionized Water.
Functional Electrolyzed Water.
These are just a few of the many names being used to
describe the next generation of water technology. The first
generation of water products produced only clean water.
Water filters, water purifiers, ion exchange or water
softeners, distillers a all just removed contaminants or
constituents from water.
This website will help to inform the reader of the History
and Science behind the Technology of Functional Electrolyzed
Water.
Water technology has now evolved to Ionization. A water
ionizer is a form of water technology that can actually
alter the properties of the water.
This alteration in water is creating aFunctional
Electrolyzed Watera(FEW) a a different kind of water. This
is not simply clean water, but water that has acquired very
different properties that give it powerful functionality or
uses at different levels of alteration.
Functional Water technology is available now and can
significantly impact your efficiency, operational
effectiveness, environmental footprint and bottom line.
The technology behind Functional Electrolyzed Water (FEW) is
based on the science of Electrolysis, the origins of which
date back to the 19th Century when the prominent Scottish
scientist Michael Faraday first began experimenting with
water and electricity.

**What is Functional Electrolyzed Water (FEW)?**Restructured water produced through a controlled
electrolysis process is referred to as Functional
Electrolyzed water. Based upon electrolytes and the
application of electrical current to tap water, the
controlled electrolysis process transformed tap water into a
functional agricultural water.
The term afunctionala describes a newly-designated
descriptor. The term describes the ability of the
generic element or component to possess secondary benefits
that were previously unknown. When an element that
triggers a beneficial result is researched and found, this
mechanism is designated as a afunctionala contributor to the
beneficial result.
As an example, grapes are commonly known to be small, round
and juicy berries found in clusters, growing on a
grapevine. Grapes have been historically consumed as a
fruit or known to be the key element in the production of an
alcoholic beverage, Wine.
In recent years, it has become scientifically known that
wine, a by product created from grapes, possessing valuable
antioxidant elements, polyphenols, provides valuable
antioxidant properties effective in their controlling of
excess of free radical damage within the human body.
Based upon the finding, grape and wine are now considered to
be a afunctionala fruit and a afunctionala beverage, in
other words and effective afunctionala medium that
collaterally provides a benefit as an end result
Likewise, resulting from the unique properties that are
instilled into tap water, through the controlled
electrolysis process, we have been able to produce a
afunctionala water capable of controlling mildew and fungus,
along with serving as an effective soil nutrients and plant
wellness and medium. And the end results that are
attained are larger yields, more effective root systems,
stronger plants and minimal usage of chemicals

[**http://electro-water.com/applications/agriculture/**](http://electro-water.com/applications/agriculture/)**Applications of Functional Water in
Agriculture**
There are significant applications of FEW in the
agricultural arena. FEW has been in use in Japanese dairy
farms for many years, the measurable results have long been
accessible on the Internet. The increase in milk production
ranging from 18-20%, and the decrease in hormones, and
antibiotics in the animal feed received major attention when
the data was first published on line in 1996.
A small study was conducted in Colorado in 2002, which bore
out some of the milk production statistics. In 2008, EAU, an
American publicly traded Company, in conjunction with the
University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine
conducted and published a significant study on the effects
of their Empowered Water on a Holstein dairy herd. Empowered
Water has the same characteristics as FEW...
What is also significant is the use of Anti Microbial
Ionized Water (AMI) Water on livestock. Due to itas
anti-microbial properties, (AMI) Water is used as a foot
rinse, anointed on wounds, cuts, abrasions etc, with a high
degree of effectiveness. Wounds appear to heal much faster
than using typical veterinary methodologies.
Due to itsa characteristics, it is not harmful to the
animals, there no long term effects, which can be
experienced with the use of antibiotics.
Here are some Agricultural Applications of FEW : Dairy
applications, Hog
applications, Poultry
applications, Equine
applications, Bovine
applications. Sterilization of
agricultural devices. Silage Making.
In addition to Animal husbandry, there are areas in crop
production where FEW is used to great effect : Pesticidal
and insecticidal reduction on plants.

application, Vegetable seed
germination, Plant growth
acceleration, Plant growth control,

Agriculture & Food Industries****Muhammad Imran AL-HAQ, et al.**Microbial control of postharvest diseases has been
extensively studied and appears to be a viable technology.
Food safety must be ensured at each postharvest processing
step, including handling, washing of raw materials, cleaning
of utensils and pipelines, and packaging. Several commercial
products are available for this purpose. The time is ripe
for developing new techniques and technologies. The use of
electrolyzed water (EW) is the product of a new concept
developed in Japan, which is now gaining popularity in other
countries. Little is known about the principle behind its
sterilizing effect, but it has been shown to have
significant bactericidal and virucidal and moderate
fungicidal properties. Some studies have been carried out in
Japan, China, and the USA on the pre- and postharvest
application of EW in the field of food processing. EW may be
produced using common salt and an apparatus connected to a
power source. As the size of the machine is quite small, the
water can be manufactured on-site. Studies have been carried
out on the use of EW as a sanitizer for fruits, utensils,
and cutting boards. It can also be used as a fungicide
during postharvest processing of fruits and vegetables, and
as a sanitizer for washing the carcasses of meat and
poultry. It is cost-effective and environment-friendly. The
use of EW is an emerging technology with considerable
potential.

**ABSTRACT**:--
The ability of power ultrasound, acidic electrolyzed water
(AEW), and gamma irradiation to inactivate Escherichia coli
O157:H7 inoculated onto alfalfa and broccoli seeds was
examined. The treatment conditions under which the alfalfa
and broccoli seeds treated with sterile deionized water
(SW), AEW, ultrasound cleaning tank (UST), ultrasound probe
(USP), and irradiation (IR) would retain a germination
percentage of >85% were first determined for each
disinfection hurdle. E. coli O157:H7 inactivation tests were
then conducted with the experimental conditions determined
in the germination tests to find out the maximum
inactivation ability of each disinfection hurdle. AEW
treatment at 55 oC for 10 min reduced E. coli O157:H7
population by 3.4 and 3.3 log CFU/g for the alfalfa and
broccoli seeds, respectively. IR at 8 kGy resulted in a
5-log reduction with seed germination of >85% for both
seed types, but a reduction in the length and thickness of
the sprouts was observed. None of the ultrasound treatments
achieved over a 2-log reduction in E. coli O157:H7
population without lowering the germination to below 85%.
The results of this study demonstrated that AEW and
ultrasound, when applied individually or in combination with
thermal treatment at 55 oC, were not able to deliver a
satisfactory inactivation of E. coli O157:H7. A combination
of several hurdles must be used to achieve a complete
elimination of E. coli O157:H7 cells on alfalfa and broccoli
seeds.

Definitive identification of free teliospores of Tilletia
indica, causal agent of Karnal bunt of wheat, requires
polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based diagnostic tests.
Since direct PCR amplification from teliospores has not been
reliable, teliospores first must be germinated in order to
obtain adequate DNA. We have routinely surface-sterilized
teliospores for 2 min with 0.4% (vol/vol) sodium
hypochlorite (NaOCl) to stimulate germination and produce
axenic cultures. However, we observed that some spores were
killed even with a 2-min NaOCl treatment, the shortest
feasible duration. Decreasing the NaOCl concentration in our
study from 0.4% to 0.3 and 0.2%, respectively, increased
teliospore germination, but treatment times longer than 2
min still progressively reduced the germination percentages.
In testing alternative methods, we found aacidic
electrolyzed watera (AEW), generated by electrolysis of a
weak solution of sodium chloride, also surface-sterilized
and increased the rate of T. indica teliospore germination.
In a representative experiment comparing the two methods,
NaOCl (0.4%) for 2 min and AEW for 30 min increased
germination from 19% (control) to 41 and 54%, respectively,
by 7 days after treatment. Because teliospores can be
treated with AEW for up to 2 h with little, if any, loss of
viability, compared with 1 to 2 min for NaOCl, treatment
with AEW has certain advantages over NaOCl for surface
sterilizing and increasing germination of teliospores of
suspect T. indica.

results showed that electrolyzed water can not only reduce

catalaseas activity of mung bean soaked in electrolyzed
water was the highest. All of these contribute to the high
activity of mung bean.

[**http://www.chem1.com/CQ/ionbunk.html**](http://www.chem1.com/CQ/ionbunk.html) **The Bottom Line**

"Here, in a
nutshell, are a few basic facts that I believe anyone with a
solid background in chemistry or physiology would concur
with:

\* "Ionized water"
is nothing more than sales fiction; the term is meaningless
to chemists.
\* Pure water (that is, water containing no dissolved ions)
is too unconductive to undergo significant electrolysis by
"water ionizer" devices.
\* Pure water can never be alkaline or acidic, nor can it be
made so by electrolysis. Alkaline water must contain
metallic ions of some kind a most commonly, sodium, calcium
or magnesium.
\* The idea that one must consume alkaline water to
neutralize the effects of acidic foods is ridiculous; we get
rid of excess acid by exhaling carbon dioxide.
\* If you do drink alkaline water, its alkalinity is quickly
removed by the highly acidic gastric fluid in the stomach.
\* Uptake of water occurs mainly in the intestine, not in the
stomach. But when stomach contents enter the intestine, they
are neutralized and made alkaline by the pancreatic
secretions a so all the water you drink eventually becomes
alkaline anyway.
\* The claims about the health benefits of drinking alkaline
water are not supported by credible scientific evidence.
\* There is nothing wrong with drinking slightly acidic
waters such as rainwater. "Body pH" is a meaningless
concept; different parts of the body (and even of individual
cells) can have widely different pH values. The pH of
drinking water has zero effect on that of the blood or of
the body's cells.
\* If you really want to de-acidify your stomach (at the
possible cost of interfering with protein digestion), why
spend hundreds of dollars for an electrolysis device when
you can take calcium-magnesium pills, Alka-Seltzer or Milk
of Magnesia?
\* Electrolysis devices are generally worthless for treating
water for health enhancement, removal of common impurities,
disinfection, and scale control. Claims that "ionized"
waters are antioxidants are untrue; hypochlorites (present
in most such waters) are in fact oxidizing agents..."

a high-voltage pigsty**Researchers to wire up pens for 2,000 pigs and generate an
electric field they believe can kill germs
A farm in central China that previously conducted the
experiment reported no cases of swine fever
...This time, Liu and collaborators will generate a static
electric field of 50 kilovolts more than 400 times
the voltage in a standard US household plug.
They believe the high-voltage discharges could break down
chemicals such as ammonia that generate unpleasant odours,
reduce biological aerosol by 50 to 90 per cent, kill germs and
generate negatively charged particles in the air that bind to
air-polluting chemicals and make them harmless.
Despite the high voltage, the volume of electrons in the cable
will be extremely low, at about 1 microampere, producing an
electric field that would not be harmful to animals or staff,
according to the researchers....
